The Society of Mary was founded in France by William Joseph Chaminade in 1817. Worldwide, there are 1,720 members, with 800 living and working in North America. Marianist Brothers, men with religious vows, can be found in many settings, but education on the high school and university level is their traditional arena for ministry. In North America, there are six provinces, most of which extend over several states, with a few encompassing parts of North America other than the United States. The six are: Pacific; St. Louis, which includes Mexico; Cincinnati; New York, which includes Puerto Rico; Meribah (in Long Island, New York); and the Province of Canada. Dedication to Mary, life in community, and equality among its members, whether brother or priest, are special characteristics of the Society. In the Contact Program,
a man explores Marianist Religious Life and deepens his spiritual life. The
contact continues to live in his current situation and joins a local community
for prayer, meals, live-ins, and other activities. He applies for the Aspirancy
Program when both he and the community agree he is ready. This mutual
discernment occurs at each step of the program. |
